We keep tour groups small, our guide team happy, and the history accurate. Every tour is a chronological narrative walking our guests through either Revolutionary or Civil War Boston. Thousands of delighted former guests vouch for us... Hub Town Tours is a Top Ten Tour of Boston, with nearly 100% 5-star reviews across all major online platforms!
-
Where does my tour start?Your starting location depends on the tour you've booked. Our most popular tour offering—Freedom Trail (2.5 Hours)—gathers at the 300th Anniversary Monument inside Boston Common, opposite 50 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108. Alternatively, our tours of Beacon Hill (2.5 Hours) and the Prescott House (1 Hour) both begin inside 55 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108. If you've booked a private tour with us, your meeting point will be specified in your custom itinerary.
-
When do the tours begin? All tours operate between 9:00am and 7:00pm. Our most popular tour, Freedom Trail (2.5 Hours), runs on the :15 and :45 of the hour throughout the day, seven days per week in high season. Our small-group tour of Beacon Hill (2.5 Hours) typically runs at 10:30am and 2:30pm on weekends only. Finally, interior tours of Prescott House (1 Hour) operate at 11:00am and 3:00pm on weekends and holidays. Private tours always commence at your convenience.
-
What is the duration of the tour? Our two outdoor walking tours (Freedom Trail and Beacon Hill) are both 2.5 hours in duration. Please allow 1.0 hour for our interior tour of the Prescott House. Finally, private tours are custom duration, though we recommend 3.0 hours to experience the full tour narrative.
-
Is there a limit on group size?Yes! All outdoor tours have a maximum of 16 guests; interior visits to the Prescott House are limited to 12 guests. It's an open secret in Boston that the Freedom Trail has become wildly popular. While other groups have ballooned in size, Hub Town Tours recognizes an experience is only worthwhile if you can hear your guide and appreciate the history up close! Our standard private tour rate includes 5 guests, but extra guests may be added for an additional fee.
-
What will we see on the tour? Please head over to Compare Tours to see the landmarks included on our three most popular itineraries! The Freedom Trail traverses an incredible range of history, from 17th-century cow pastures to 18th-century capitols to 19th-century marketplaces. Our most popular offerings are the Freedom Trail (Private) or small-group Freedom Trail (2.5 Hours) strolls, which visit Downtown Boston and the North End. Our Beacon Hill (2.5 Hours) tour explores Boston’s most picturesque residential neighborhood, featuring sites of the Black Heritage Trail and Civil War Boston.
-
Will we enter any historic sites?Aside from public spaces and burying grounds, your outdoor guided walk will NOT go inside historic structures. Most landmark buildings in Boston—on the Freedom Trail or within Beacon Hill—are privately-run museums or churches, and several charge admission fees. If you’d like to enter select locations, we suggest returning after your tour. For private reservations, however, we’re happy to help coordinate site visits. The Beacon Hill (2.5 Hours) tour does begin inside the William Hickling Prescott House, but most Beacon Hill sites are private residences.
-
Is this a good tour for all ages?Hub Town Tours strives to offer an experience that is accessible for a wide range of ages and learning levels. We welcome visitors of any age, but tours involve more than a mile of walking over the course of multiple hours, with an in-depth historical narrative best suited for adults and older children. As such, children ages 5 and under are always free! For families with younger children, we recommend booking a private tour with a duration of 2.0 hours or shorter.
-
How strenuous is the walking? We recommend at least a moderate fitness level for all guests. Our most popular offering—the small-group Freedom Trail (2.5 Hours) tour—travels approximately 2.0 miles over relatively level, paved surfaces. We always look for benches, but please be prepared to be on your feet! Our walking tour in Beacon Hill (2.5 Hours) covers only 1.5 miles, but as the name of the neighborhood suggests, there are multiple inclines and declines along the route. Beacon Hill sidewalks are also entirely brick; while incredibly quaint, they can be quite uneven.
-
Any COVID safety precautions?Absolutely! Please review our complete COVID Guidelines. Walking tours of the Freedom Trail and Beacon Hill are 100% outdoors in well-ventilated spaces, and groups are always limited to 16 individuals. Please note, masks are NOT required on tour. We also specialize in private tours, which can be limited to your immediate household.
-
Are the tour routes accessible?Hub Town Tours endeavors to make our tours accessible for everyone. As an old city, Boston has a many narrow alleyways and uneven sidewalks that make passage difficult. The Freedom Trail is wheelchair, scooter, and stroller accessible, but we regretfully cannot offer an accessible Beacon Hill experience due to hilly terrain and non-ADA-compliant sidewalks. Our Prescott House tour offers elevator access to all three levels. We kindly ask that you let us know in advance about any accessibility concerns, and pledge to do our best to accommodate.
-
Can I arrive via public transit?Hub Town Tours encourages all visitors to use public transit! In Boston, the subway and bus system is referred to as “the T”: all stations are identified by T-in-Circle signs and major transit lines are color-coded. For public tours, the nearest stations—in order of proximity—are Park Street (Red and Green lines); Boylston (Silver and Green); Downtown Crossing (Orange and Red); Government Center (Blue and Green); and Charles/MGH (Red).
-
Where should I park my vehicle?Parking in Downtown Boston is as difficult as it is expensive. If possible, please utilize public transit! The closest parking to our starting location at 50 Beacon Street is Boston Common Garage (0 Charles Street), underneath the Common. For its proximity and relative affordability, we recommend Center Plaza Garage (43 Tremont Street). Other garages near the midpoint of the Freedom Trail—and closer to where the tour concludes in the North End—are Dock Square Garage (20 Clinton Street), Haymarket Center Garage (136 Blackstone Street), and Pi Alley Parking Garage (275 Washington Street). Street parking is free and unlimited duration on Sundays and holidays, but only 2-hour duration on all other days.
-
How should I dress for my tour?Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are an absolute necessity! Boston’s sidewalks come in all manner of surfaces—concrete, asphalt, bricks, pavers, cobblestones—few of which are actually level. It is good practice to bring a light jacket (except perhaps during the hottest months of July and August). During the spring and autumn, please dress accordingly in layers and be prepared for windy spots downtown!
-
What happens in poor weather? We make every effort to deliver all tours that are scheduled. Simply put, tours operate rain or shine! The only reason we would cancel or suspend a tour is the presence of dangerous conditions such as thunder, lightning, hail, and/or high winds. If a tour is suspended due to weather at any point, all guests are entitled to a full refund to the card on record.
-
How do I pay for the tour?Payment must be made in advance for all public tours, whether booked through our official website or third-party platforms. For private tours, Hub Town Tours collects a deposit to hold a reservation; the remaining balance is then collected at the conclusion of your tour. We are happy to accept multiple forms of digital payment including Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App, as well as all major credit cards. We can accept cash, but prefer digital or card payments. And gratuities for your guide are never obligated, but always appreciated!
-
What is your tour refund policy? Please provide 24 hours notice prior to scheduled start time and date to secure a full refund. Cancellations with fewer than 24-hour notice will result in the loss of tour payment or deposit. We aim to provide a guided tour experience of Boston that is consistently of the highest quality and enjoyed by every guest. If you feel your experience has fallen shy of that standard, please let us know within 24 hours of your tour starting time by emailing help@hubtowntours.com.
-
What should I do after my tour? There is plenty to do in Boston after your tour! For history buffs: climb aboard the U.S.S. Constitution; visit the battlegrounds at Lexington & Concord; explore Cambridge, in particular Harvard Yard or MIT's campus. For families: visit the New England Aquarium; head to the Museum of Science; or hop aboard replica ships at the Boston Tea Party Museum. For sports lovers: take a tour of historic Fenway Park; check out the underrated Sports Museum inside TD Garden; or visit the Boston Marathon finish line. For foodies: Don’t miss an Italian meal and pastry in the North End; nosh a lobster roll at James Hook & Co.; and sample our local breweries, such as Trillium, Night Shift, and Harpoon.
Thankfully we've never needed to use it, but Hub Town Tours requires all guests to accept the following Waiver and Release of Liability. Please review before joining us on a Boston history experience!
