City Upon a Hill

John Winthrop  (Founding, 1630)

"For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us."

Boston holds an exceptional place at the forefront of the American project. In 1951, a local journalist proposed a special pedestrian path to link Boston's landmarks and help visitors navigate the town's tangled streets. Today, the red-bricked Freedom Trail    connects sixteen historic sites of national significance, comprising public buildings and parks; original burying grounds; churches and meeting houses; America's Ship of State; one Revolutionary battlefield; and a famous Bostonian's home.

"We all learned so much, and in such a great way! This interactive tour made history into a living, breathing thing that we will not soon forget."
