FORT WAGNER

Join Hub Town Tours as we commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Fort Wagner in South Carolina with a special tour of Beacon Hill and the Black Heritage Trail. In July 1863, the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry led the Union assault on Fort Wagner, and their heroic efforts paved the way for a more integrated American military. This 2.5-hour walking tour explores sites along the Black Heritage Trail, including landmarks such as the African Meeting House, with a special emphasis on those connected to the abolitionist movement and the contributions of Massachusetts troops to the U.S Civil War. We will delve deeply into the tumultuous events of the Abolitionist Era as 19th-century Bostonians grappled with the institution of slavery and demanded an end to racial injustice across their young nation.
